COLUMBIA HEIGHTS has undergone significant revitalization in the last 15 years, starting with the opening of the Columbia Heights Metro station in 1999. This action served as the catalyst for bringing in economic development and new middle-class and upper middle-class residents. However, unlike some other gentrified neighborhoods in the city, it has not become homogeneous. Columbia Heights is arguably Washington’s most ethnically and economically diverse neighborhood, with high-priced condominiums and townhouses sharing the street with public and middle-income housing. MOUNT PLEASANT is its more suburban neighbor (“A village in the city” proclaim the banners in the square), with leafy streets lined with historic townhomes.
