DUPONT CIRCLE is a historic neighborhood of elegant apartments, townhomes, and mansions. Originally called Pacific Circle and part of the “Old City”–Pierre L’Enfant’s original plan for Washington–this area remained undeveloped until after the Civil War, when there was a large influx of new residents. In 1882, Congress renamed the circle after the service of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Dupont in that war, and the area was considered a desirable location for fashionable homes and mansions, especially along Massachusetts Avenue. Today Dupont Circle is a blend of bustling cafes, shops, and restaurants on the commercial streets bordering its still-elegant side streets.
