PENN QUARTER, GALLERY PLACE/CHINATOWN. Two of my favorite museums—the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery—are located at the epicenter of Penn Quarter, across the street from Gallery Place shopping mall and the Verizon Center, the sports arena where the Washington Capitals and Wizards play hockey and basketball. Since the opening of the Verizon Center in 1997, Penn Quarter has become an arts and entertainment district with restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, art galleries, theaters and trendy shops. Interspersed among all this activity are many condominiums and apartment buildings.
